RAMMED EARTH HOME IN CASTLETON

Ontario's first insulated rammed earth home, is set into a hill near Castleton, Ontario.  The house uses approx. 20kW/h/m2 to heat annually.  That's the equivalent of 20 tea candles.

HERITAGE RENOVATION WYCHWOOD

Small precise alterations were made to this historically protected building in Toronto.  We updated all the building systems and used spray foam to air seal and insulate this home.  Energy use was reduced significantly.

ROSEDALE HOUSE

This was a  gut renovation of a 100 year old house in a historic district.  As such all of the work had to occur on the interior.  The goal of the project was to reduce the energy use 75%.

URBAN STRAW BALE RENOVATION

This ninety year old masonry Tudor style home is situated in the Beach area of Toronto along the slopes of what was once a natural ravine.  It is perched on a challenging site, set mid-slope between the road in front and a laneway behind.

Since its original construction, there have been minimal changes to the building. To honour this history, the beautifully panelled living and dining rooms were restored.  The spaces that wrap around these original rooms allow an open flow, permitting the penetration of an abundance of natural light. A full-width two storey addition was constructed at the rear to create an open concept kitchen and family room.  A wall of triple glazed full height glazing extends the home out into the lush sloping backyard.

LAWRENCE GARDEN

The owners wanted to update their front garden to reflect their modern taste.  Taking queues from the existing Bauhaus front door a modern box bay window clad in Parklex was conceived.  Cedar strip walls enclose the front garden providing a more eventful entry.

STRAW BALE COTTAGE

By wrapping an original cottage with straw bale and putting on an addition this building is very close to the Passive House standard.  20kWh/m2a.  Natural lime render and earth plaster are the finishes throughout.
